Keeping your teeth and mouth healthy will both prevent tooth decay and other oral problems and contribute to the health of the rest of your body. Brushing and flossing regularly is essential, but it’s also important to visit your dentist for a thorough examination and professional cleaning every six months. Routine exams and cleanings can help you:

  • Avoid expensive dental procedures.
  • Prevent bad breath, tooth decay and gum disease.
  • Reduce or eliminate the stains from food or drinks on your teeth.
  • Spend less time in our offices overall.
  • Keep your smile happy and healthy for a lifetime.

While you’re in our office, we’ll take a close look at your teeth and gums, checking them for any problems such as signs of gum disease or tooth decay. We’ll most likely take a few X-rays as well to get a look at what’s going on under the surface. Without X-rays, we wouldn’t be able to detect many dental problems until it’s too late to deal with them effectively.

We’ll also give your teeth a thorough cleaning. Your dental hygienist will take a look at your teeth to check for cavities and to make sure any dental work you’ve previously received is holding up well. Then we’ll start the cleaning process, using a wide variety of tools to get at plaque and tartar that you wouldn’t be able to remove on your own. We’ll also floss and polish your teeth, and we may even apply a special fluoride to help prevent cavities. There’s no need to feel anxious, but if you’re nervous, let us know, and we can provide you with sedation to make you more comfortable. If we find any problems with your teeth or gums, we’ll let you know and discuss treatment options with you.

One of the most common methods for repairing teeth with minor damage or decay is by applying a dental filling. This simple procedure is often used to treat cavities, which are small holes or voids in a person’s teeth that are caused by excessive exposure to harmful bacteria and plaque. If left untreated, food particles and bacteria can use cavities to access the inner portions of teeth and cause further damage. With this in mind, cavities should be treated as early as possible.

At Smile Dental Care, we pride ourselves in offering strong, secure fillings that are designed to repair a tooth and add to its overall strength. They are built to last, and they can fully withstand regular tasks like chewing hard foods. By visiting our practice for a dental filling, you can be sure that you are receiving a top-quality restoration.

An effective barrier against harmful bacteria and acids, dental sealants are applied over a person’s back teeth as a way of preventing damage and decay. Sealants consist of a thin layer of acrylic that can be easily painted over one’s teeth. Once applied, sealants go a long way towards preventing damage, while also making the teeth easier to clean. This makes sealants a great option for many patients.

The deep grooves and fissures found on a person’s back teeth are home to roughly 75 percent of all tooth decay that exists inside the mouth. Even when correct brushing and flossing techniques are used, these areas can be incredibly difficult to reach. One major benefit of dental sealants is that they smooth out these rough surfaces, making these areas substantially easier to clean and maintain. This can be extremely helpful for preventing cavities and protecting the health of the teeth.

Many patients who receive dental sealants are children and teenagers who are still learning the proper methods for brushing and flossing. In fact, baby teeth receive particularly major benefits from dental sealants due to the fact that they often feature noticeably deep grooves and fissures. That being said, many adults also receive dental sealants in order to protect their teeth from damage.

If you sustain an injury to your mouth or jaw when playing a contact sport, your smile could be severely damaged, requiring various expensive treatments to repair it. The good news is that a well-fit mouth guard can help to keep your teeth and gums safe. If you play any form of contact sport regularly, the American Dental Association recommends that you wear a mouthguard to protect your teeth.

Making sure to wear the right mouth guard is extremely important. There are three kinds of mouth guards generally available: pre-made mouth guards, “boil-and-bite” mouth guards, and custom-made mouth guards. Pre-made guards are cheaper and readily available commercially, but they won’t fit your mouth particularly well, given that they are mass-produced. “Boil-and-bite” mouth guards, meanwhile, are still mass-produced but are fitted to your teeth by being boiled before you bite down on them, allowing them to better fit your teeth. These are also commercially available. Custom-made mouth guards are generally the strongest and will best fit your mouth. They will allow the wearer to speak and breathe normally and offer the best protection. At Smile Dental Care, we take pride in creating this top-of-the-line protection for our patients.
