Dentures are a form of replacement teeth that can be removed from the mouth for cleaning and repair. Here at Smile Dental Care, we offer both complete dentures (dentures that replace all of your teeth) as well as partial dentures (used for patients only missing a few of their teeth) to our patients who need them.
If you are missing some of your teeth, but not all of them, then we’ll most likely recommend partial dentures. With partial dentures, we’ll set your replacement teeth in a pink-colored plastic base (the color makes it match your gums more closely). These dentures can sometimes involve a metal framework, used to hold the denture in place. Partial dentures not only replace your missing teeth but also make sure your other teeth don’t start changing position in your mouth over time. Partial dentures will often need to be removed for cleaning and repair.
Complete dentures are used to replace all your teeth. They can either be made before your teeth are removed to make sure you get your dentures more quickly, but at the risk of needing more adjustments in the future. They can also be made after your teeth are removed, which means you won’t get your dentures for several weeks, but they’ll need fewer adjustments once they arrive since most of the healing process will be complete. Like partial dentures, complete dentures will most likely need to be removed for cleaning, adjustment, and repair.
An Alternative to Dentures
If you just can’t stand the idea of dentures, then you might want to consider dental implants. Implants are generally considered more comfortable, durable, and permanent than dentures. This comes at a price, however, since dental implants are typically much more expensive. If implants aren’t affordable for you right now, then dentures may be the best option for you.
