What Is Cosmetic Dentistry?

Generally speaking, cosmetic dentistry is any form of dentistry that makes your gums or teeth look healthier and better. But cosmetic dentistry neither improves nor changes the function of your teeth. This means that cosmetic dentistry only makes minor cosmetic changes to the surface of your teeth, and does not involve major surgery. However, surgery is occasionally still necessary, even in cosmetic dentistry. For the most part though, cosmetic dentistry is concerned with the look of your teeth, rather than their function or their overall health.

Cosmetic Dentistry Options

  • Bonding: A bonding is a resin applied to your existing tooth. We use it to cover up any existing flaws, and then molded to look like a natural tooth.
  • Bridges: If we fuse false teeth between two porcelain crowns, then we can close the gaps left by missing teeth. Most bridges are called fixed bridges. Fixed bridges cannot be removed. While they don’t last forever, a patient committed to taking good care of them can get them to last up to ten years.
  • Teeth Whitening: Teeth whitening is easily the most common form of cosmetic dentistry. It’s also simple and easy to do. Many stores sell bleaching kits, but it’s generally considered best overall to have a dentist bleach discolored teeth.
  • Veneers: Similar in many ways to bonding, veneers are porcelain laminates that we bond directly to your teeth to close caps or cover up flaws like discoloration or chipping. Veneers are generally more durable and longer lasting than regular bondings.
